My CV - Click Here for Network Engineer Section

This is what I look like.

Since graduating with an electronics degree from Imperial College, London in 1977 I’ve mainly worked as an engineer in the broadcasting industry - my first position was with the BBC and then, in 1981 when I moved to Australia, I continued to work in the broadcasting industry.

I bought my first PC in 1989 and became involved with PC support and programming at work. For the 2 years from ‘92 to ‘94 I worked at the Australian Museum in Sydney making PC controlled interactive exhibits which I programmed using C++ and assembler.

I moved back to England in 1994 and worked in London, back in broadcasting, where I also had responsibility for the technical operation of several smaller offices in Europe and North America. Since then, the recording and editing of material for TV and radio has changed so that it's all carried out digitally and the business of broadcasting has therefore become heavily reliant on computer networks.

In 1996 I began using Windows NT server and, after that, I single-handedly, installed and maintained computer networks at 6 overseas locations. I’ve organised Internet connections to branch offices using the best locally available solution: a T1 line in Washington, a 64kps leased-line in Moscow, ISDN in Brussels and ADSL in London.

I started to pursue Microsoft certification in 1999 and attained an MCSE in April 2000. I upgraded it to the Windows 2000 track in July 2001.

On gaining this last qualification I decided to work fulltime as a network engineer and consultant operating through the company Rhebus Limited of which I'm a co-founder and shareholder.

In the last 3 years I’ve been upgrading servers to Windows 2000 and 2003, installing mailservers and firewalls plus setting up workstations and notebook PCs with Windows XP.

I’ve also been providing network support on a formal and ad hoc basis.

In September 2002 I achieved the Cisco CCNA qualification.

My networking skills are in the following areas:-

1 - Trouble-shooting network and server problems.  My electronics background gives me a better feeling for whether a problem is in hardware or software. Using remote access I can often diagnose and repair a problem without having to come on-site.
2 - TCP/IP and Internetworking. I’m skilled with the TCP/IP maths of sub-netting, routing tables and default gateways and can setup DHCP, WINS and DNS servers. I also know how to take advantage of the enhancements Microsoft has made to these services in Windows 2003.
3 - Network design. I like to design in redundancy so that network services are not disrupted by the failure of any one item of equipment.
4 - Internet connection. Using the now commonplace Broadband Internet connection I know how to setup firewalls for Internet access that allow VPN connections in and out and organise company-wide email systems for maximum efficiency to filter out virus and spam emails and to allow email to be accessed remotely including from mobile devices.
